When to Choose the Acne Laser Treatment?
By Paul Hancock
It is not uncommon for scarring to occur with cases of severe acne. This scarring can quite serious if left untreated. Acne laser treatment is a preferred method for treating this kind of scarring. Some laser treatments really do not use a laser at all, but a special light that increases the temperature of the affected skin, which can lead to regeneration of the skin. In other cases a laser is used to remove the scars from the top layers of the skin. In the past acne laser treatments would involve several visits to the doctors office; and before that acne laser treatments involved treatments for prolonged periods of time. Now, treatments are more efficient and take less time, due to research and development of new lasers, making acne laser treatment more effective.
Hemoglobin and chlorophyll have porphyrin rings in their make up. Several types of porphyrins absorb light energy, especially when oxygen is present while exposing to light. When this situation takes place, the porphyrins become photo sensitizers and can provoke the production of singlet oxygen which is very dangerous to the cells. Stimulating certain kinds of porphyrins is effective by using a certain type of light therapy, which is called photodynamic therapy. This is similar to the acne laser treatment. Although stimulating the porphyrins may seem like a paradox, being that it causes destruction to the cells, it has beneficial effects when used on the area affected by acne. The stimulated porphyrins destroy bacteria quickly.
An important fact to know about acne laser treatment is that only laser that have a certain bandwidth can be used. Some lasers have a narrow band light, with a bandwidth f 415 to 420 nm. Other lasers have what is called a broadband light and a bandwidth ranging from 510 to 595 nm. Orange and red light lasers have a bandwidth of 610 to 635 nm, which have be used successfully for acne laser treatment. There are also infrared spectrum which ranges from 120 to 1540 nm. This infrared spectrum laser treatment has be successfully use when there is thermal injury to sebaceous glands.
