Prescription Acne Medication Should Be Your Last Resort
By Natalie Sinan
I dealt with severe acne throughout my teenage years and, to my dismay, well into my adult life. I know how devastating acne can be, and I know how it feels to be so desperate for a cure that you’ll take whatever prescription acne medication your dermatologist fills for you.
I still firmly believe, however, that prescription acne medication should only be taken as a last resort. Not because I’m a staunch believer in “natural methods” or the theory that time cures all - in my case, time alone certainly wasn’t enough - but because of the adverse side effects I suffered while on prescription medication.
Each and every time a dermatologist recommended I try a new medication, topical or otherwise, something went wrong. My lips cracked so badly they tore and bled, I had to stop wearing contact lenses because my eyes dried out, I had almost constant nosebleeds… And the list goes on and on.
What medications have I tried? You name it, and I’ve probably been on it at some point. Tetracycline, Minocycline, Adapalene, Tretinoin, Clindamycin, and, of course, Accutane. This was over the course of an almost decade-long battle with acne, beginning in my teenage years and lasting until early adulthood.
Accutane was probably the worst experience, both because of the side effects and the false hope it offered. When I first started using Accutane, I had such a strong feeling that this was the one. This was the medication that was finally going to cure my acne and give me back my self-confidence. But after a treatment regimen that lasted six months, nothing had changed, and things might well have been even worse.
Accutane dried out my skin so severely that it constantly cracked and bled, no matter how much skin ointment I applied. With previous medications, any dryness I experienced was confined to my face, but with Accutane, it was all over. I was also forced to go back to wearing glasses during this time because my eyes weren’t able to produce the moisture needed to use contact lenses. To date, even years after stopping treatment, my eyes still haven’t returned to their original state; I’m not sure they ever will.
In the end, after exhausting every prescription acne medication available, I was able to cure my acne with a combination topical and pill system. No prescription, and no side effects, just results.
My point is this: prescription acne medication is not always the answer. I know from personal experience how desperate acne can make you. But before you jump at whatever scrip your dermatologist fills, think about the side effects, and think about the possibility that you may well be able to cure your acne with medication that doesn’t even require a prescription.
I suffered from acne for years, but when I found a medication that worked, my entire life changed for the better. There’s no reason that the same can’t happen for you.
