Eye Strain Causes, Prevention And Treatments
By S. Wagner

In the technological age, one of the most common problems that people face is eye strain. Between computers and televisions, this problem can be annoying at best and debilitating at worst. This article is going to explain what eye strain is, what causes it and how it can be avoided and treated. Hopefully, after reading this, if you suffer from eye strain, your days of suffering will be a thing of the past.

Eye strain is a condition that occurs when the muscles of the eyes are overused. Whenever any muscle stays in one position too long, it is going to get strained. That’s just basic anatomy. The question is, what causes this to happen? Why do we get eye strain?

For people who work on computers, they’re staring at a screen, usually in one position, for hours during the day. Unless they take frequent breaks for coffee or whatever, eventually, because their eyes have been in that one position for so long, they are going to get strained. This is almost unavoidable. Same thing with watching TV if you’ve been sitting in front of the set for hours on end. Eventually, staring at the screen will get to your eyes and they will strain.

The to avoiding eye strain is to keep the muscles moving around. This is easier said than done if you have a job, such as data entry, where you are typing all day. However, by simply averting your eyes away from the screen on occasion, this will greatly reduce the strain on your eyes. For typists, doing this after each paragraph typed works wonders.

Fortunately, there are a number of ways to combat eye strain.

One way is to use computer monitors that reduce the glare and are easier on your eyes. Most new monitors today are optimized to reduce eye strain. For the ones that are older, there are screens that you can purchase to put over the monitor that will work just as well.

Another thing you can do to avoid eye strain is to exercise your eyes regularly. There are a number of different exercises that you can use. These can be easily found on the Internet. Just do a search on “eye exercises.”

Nutrition is also very important for reducing eye strain. Plenty of vitamin A and beta carotene are excellent for your eyes and will greatly reduce the risk of eye strain.

Try to avoid eye drops if you can. These only mask the symptoms and don’t really treat the problem. Using drugs for eye strain should be your last resort and avoided if possible.

Constant eye strain can lead to long term eye problems, so it is important that you take all precautions to avoid eye strain, such as using special monitors, exercising your eyes and getting proper nutrition. I’ve been working on computers for over 20 years and have almost never suffered from eye strain. So it is possible to work in the technical field and save your eyes at the same time.
