The root cause of many problems in the colon is constipation. Constipation can be caused by any number of factors including:
Consumption of some prescription medications. Medications typically given for the treatment of high blood pressure, and arthritis can have constipating effects in some individuals.
Inadequate fluid intake. Many people simply don’t drink enough water and other liquids during the day. This can cause a problem with elimination.
Diet. Not getting enough fiber in the diet is one of the leading causes of constipation.
Lack of physical activity. Staying active is crucial to colon health.
Age. The body’s natural processes tend to slow as a person ages and this can include their digestion and elimination system.
Many individuals treat their own constipation with over the counter remedies, including laxatives. This can lead to a dependency on the chemicals in the laxatives, which does not help in overall colon health. Enemas are another approach that many people undertake in an effort to not only relieve chronic constipation but also to cleanse their colon. Colon cleansing is advisable and in fact, some people who first experience a colon cleansing lose weight in addition to unwanted fecal matter.
Issues and Problems
Although many people believe that the only real issue with constipation is the discomfort, this is not necessarily true. One of the most common problems that are associated with blockages in the colon is fissures. These are small tears in the lining of the rectum which are caused by straining to eliminate stools. Lazy bowel syndrome can also be the result of an unhealthy colon. This is primarily experienced in individuals who turn to laxatives, either prescription or over the counter, as a means of eliminating waste. Over time they find it difficult to go without the aid of the laxatives and their body may also have trouble absorbing nutrients and vitamins.
Dangers
A number of the potential problems that can result from an unhealthy colon are treatable. These include diverticulosis. This condition is common in aging individuals and is essentially caused by impacted fecal matter. Eventually, if left untreated diverticulosis, can result in the poisons that are generated from the waste, leaking into the bloodstream. Although it is rare for someone to die from this condition, it can certainly happen.
Malnutrition is also attributed to the colon. This is the reason that the midsection of someone who is malnourished will protrude. Their body is not efficient in ridding itself of the waste and as a result the stomach distends. If this condition continues without treatment it can rob the body’s vital organs of important nutrients. This is of particular concern to someone who is still in the growing stages of life.
Colon cancer is a much more serious illness. Colon cancer is often difficult to diagnosis and in many cases the symptoms are attributed to other things. Colon cancer survival rates are high if the patient was diagnosed and treatment began early in the disease. Anyone who has a history of colon cancer within their family should be screened early and should undergo screenings at regular intervals.
